Spiegel looks to sell catalog, Eddie Bauer
By Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, April 11, 2004
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Spiegel Inc., operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, said it is negotiating with an unnamed party for the sale of its famed namesake catalog, and also is looking to sell its Eddie Bauer business.
Spiegel is seeking a buyer for Eddie Bauer, including its home furnishings and apparel stores, catalog, Internet and licensing operations. Among the licensees is Lane Home Furnishings, which has produced furniture under the Eddie Bauer brand since 1991.
William G. "Skipper" Holliman, Lane's executive vice president of sales and marketing, said, "We continue to do well with Eddie Bauer. It's selling very well."
Holliman said no additions to Eddie Bauer are set for the April High Point market, but new pieces might be introduced in October. The line's most recent introductions were in April 2003.
Spiegel has been operating under Chapter 11 since March 2003. In January, the company repositioned the catalog and relaunched its Web site, www.spiegel.com.
In its home presentation, including furniture and rugs, the catalog enlisted various celebrities to enhance its credibility.
The company said it has reached an agreement to sell its Newport News catalog to Pangea Holdings.
