QUINCY, Fla. — Bedroom and contract manufacturer Higdon Furniture has broken ground on a plant in Cairo, Ga., and expects to begin production there in September.
Higdon, which celebrated its 51st anniversary this month, eventually will employ about 100 people at the plant. It will occupy 12 acres of a 42-acre site, with the remainder reserved for future expansion.
Higdon's main plant is in Quincy, where it last expanded its facilities in 1995.
Higdon makes promotional to midpriced bedroom product there at retail price points from $399 to $999. In April 2000, the company purchased a MacTavish Furniture bedroom plant in Quincy, allowing it to offer a more diversified line, with solid wood and veneers at retails of $899 and up.
The new plant in Cairo will focus on the $399 to $999 retail range.
At the groundbreaking, local and state officials joined company officials Joe Higdon, corporate secretary-treasurer, and his sons, Warren Higdon, president, and Ralph, vice president. Joe is the son of J. Warren Higdon Sr., who began operations in Quincy on April 1, 1953.
At the High Point market, Higdon shows in the Profit Center, 156 S. Main St.
