Bernhardt Furniture to close Shelby, N.C., upholstery plant

Will consolidate production in Lenoir, N.C.

Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, April 14, 2009

SHELBY, N.C. — Bernhardt Furniture plans to close one of its upholstery plants here on June 12 because of poor business conditions.

The closure would eliminate more than 100 jobs. Employees were notified Monday.

The facility makes sofa and chairs, including a small amount of furniture for the company's Martha Stewart line, according to William Howard, vice president of human resources for the Lenoir, N.C.-based manufacturer.

Howard said the company has no plans to sell the facility and told employees that no material or equipment will be removed, in hopes that the economy will turn around and business will pick up.

The plant has operated here for 40 years.

Howard said that the company's upholstery plants here and in Lenoir had both been operating on short time. Production will be consolidated in Lenoir.
