Therapedic has new licensee
Michael J. Knell -- Furniture Today, February 1, 2004
EDMONTON, Alberta — Canadian bedding industry veteran Gerald Schmidt has formed a new company, Natural Rest Bedding, which has been named the Therapedic International licensee for western Canada.
Schmidt's company has acquired the mattress division of former Therapedic licensee The Apex Group. Apex owners John and Monica Neumann have decided to focus on other businesses.
Natural Rest is operating in the former 50,000-square-foot Apex bedding factory and will ship to retailers from the Manitoba-Ontario border in the east to Vancouver Island in the west.
"This factory was producing a lot of goods for the hospitality industry," Schmidt said. "We're going to focus on independent retailers. Right now, we're producing about 150 sets a day. We're going to grow that to between 300 and 400 a day over the next 12 months."
Schmidt previously worked for 12 years with Bedford Furniture/King Koil and three years with Kingsdown Canada.
Michael Pino, president of Therapedic, said that with the addition of Natural Rest, Therapedic can handle national accounts in Canada and build a Canadian brand.
Therapedic's other Canadian licensees are Therapedic/Crown Design of Toronto and Therapedic du Québec in Granby, Quebec.
Natural Rest will produce the complete Therapedic line, including the new high-end Lloyd and Penfield collection and new visco-elastic offerings.
