By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 28, 2004
FRESNO, Calif. — FRESNO, Calif. — William "Bill" Griffith, a longtime sales representative in central California for Leggett & Platt's Consumer Products Unit, has died. He was 76.
Griffith began his career in the furniture industry as a semi-pro basketball player. He played for an industrial team sponsored by the Howell Corp., which owned Metal Craft, a bedding support manufacturer based in Azusa, Calif. After the team was dissolved, he took a sales territory with the company in central California, calling on furniture retailers.
After the sale of Metal Craft in 1978, he joined Bedline, another California-based manufacturer of frames and other bedding support products. In 1984, Leggett & Platt acquired Bedline and Griffith continued as a rep for Leggett's Fashion Bed Group and Steel Products Division.
Griffith was known as a soft-spoken man who earned the respect of his clients and peers. Despite physical ailments, he was calling on accounts days before his death.
He is survived by his wife and a sister.
