HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.— In a One Best Idea contest, Furniture First retailers shared money-saving or profit-generating innovations that have helped their businesses. The winners:

Grand prize: Stephen Kane of Carpet Town Furniture, Weston Mills, N.Y. Kane uses a hot-air balloon to promote the five Carpet Town stores. Hovering over local outdoor events, the balloon has raised public awareness of Carpet Town and has driven traffic to the stores.

First runner up: Tom Godwin and Bob White, Godwin's/ Mattress First, Saginaw, Mich. Godwin's raised retail prices by 3%, an increase that met little resistance among shoppers but added nicely to the company's bottom line.
