300 exhibitors set for Copenhagen show

By Brian Carroll -- Furniture Today, March 28, 2004

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Some 300 exhibitors representing 16 countries are expected at this year's Scandinavian Furniture Fair, set for May 12-16 at Copenhagen's Bella Center.

Denmark's largest furniture event, the show follows a better-than-expected 2003 for Danish furniture exports. According to the Assn. of Danish Furniture Industries, the fair's organizer, exports last year rose 1% despite a significant weakening in Germany, the country's largest export market.

The United States, Denmark's fifth-largest export market, imported 6% more than in 2002, or about $188 million. Fueling this gain was lower-priced furniture. The designer goods for which the region is famous did not fare as well, especially outside Scandinavia.

"Suppliers of discount furniture to large international discount chains prospered the most," said Keld Korsager, managing director of the association. "Traditional furniture manufacturers had a hard year."

The upcoming show encompasses about 250 temporary exhibitors and nearly 60 permanent industrial and designer showrooms in the Scandinavian Trade Mart.

Special programs will include architect Susse Fischer's Nomadic Furniture exhibit, showcasing the work of 13 design teams. Each team has paired a recognized designer and a brand-name furniture manufacturer to develop a mobile furniture piece.

Another exhibit will display five furniture pieces designed especially for a Danish celebrity or VIP. In the past two years, designs were presented to Crown Prince Frederik and politician Naser Khader. For this year's fair, a woman has been selected but not yet identified.

The show also will honor two Danish furniture design legends — the late Børge Mogensen and Hans J. Wegner — with an exhibit of some of their most famous works.

A popular part of the annual fair is the TalentZone, which showcases budding designers, their work and their schools. So far, submissions have been accepted from Spain, South Korea, Romania and Iceland.

Information on the show is posted on the Web at www.scandinavianfurniturefair.com.
