About the wood style survey

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 28, 2004

The first installment in Furniture/Today's exclusive, two-part report focusing on style trends at the retail level, this issue's report covers case goods style trends. The second report, covering upholstery style trends, will appear in the Nov. 8 issue.

Furniture retailers operating more than 540 stores answered Furniture/Today's biennial survey on style trends in case goods in February. By far, the largest percentage of responding retailers are furniture stores operating in a single market; 11% have stores in more than one retail market.

Retailers gave Furniture/Today information on sales in 2003 for styles, wood types and finishes in master and youth bedroom, formal and casual dining at low, medium and high price points. Regional differences in style preferences are also shown.

To be shown in the report, at least 10% of retailers had to identify a style, wood or finish as being best-selling or fastest-growing.

To determine market share, responses were weighted to reflect a retailer's sales in each product category and at each price point level.

For example, the response from a retailer with annual sales of $20 million in master bedroom was given greater weight than that from a store doing $5 million in that category.

Breakdowns by store type, region, sales volume and product category sales are presented here.

The case goods style survey was conducted by Research Specialist Judi Fulbright and Director of Market Research Kay Anderson, with assistance from Database Coordinator Cynthia Myers.
