Culp relocating H.P. offices, showroom
By Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, March 28, 2004
HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT— Culp Inc. is relocating its offices and showroom here from downtown to a 55,000-square-foot building on Eastchester Drive, a move it says signals its intention to remain a major supplier of upholstery fabric and mattress ticking.
The company, which will spend about $4.4 million to buy and remodel the three-story former Sara Lee Sock Co. building, plans to complete the move in time for the October High Point market, said Ken Ludwig, senior vice president.
Culp will be in its current showroom on the 14th floor of the International Home Furnishings Center for the April market.
Ludwig said plans haven't been finalized on where Culp will exhibit for the Showtime fabric fair in July.
"With all the shakeups and uncertainty in the textile industry, we think this move makes a statement to our people, our community and the industry as a whole that Culp is a stable, solid business and we intend to be right here," Ludwig said.
Currently Culp's corporate offices occupy about 40,000 square feet at 101 South Main St.
The IHFC showroom is about 7,000 square feet.
Culp and other fabric producers with nearby IHFC showrooms said building officials told them in January their leases would not be renewed after April because of plans to revamp the 13th and 14th floors to accommodate furniture manufacturers.
However, Ludwig said Culp's decision to move was not prompted by the building's action.
He said the leases on the showroom and corporate offices were running out "and we were examining our options for both locations anyway when the former Sara Lee building came on the market, and we realized it had enough space to let us have both the showroom and the offices under the same roof for the first time."
The Sara Lee building has been vacant since late last year when that company transferred its High Point workers to facilities in neighboring Winston-Salem.
