La-Z-Boy names Matlock sr. VP of sales, marketing

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 7, 2004

Veteran La-Z-Boy sales representative Steve Matlock has been named senior vice president of sales and marketing for La-Z-Boy Residential, a new position.

Separately, the company has appointed Mel Martinez, a former secretary of Housing and Urban Development and a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Florida, to its board of directors. La-Z-Boy Chairman Pat Norton called Martinez, a lawyer by training who came to Florida from his native Cuba at age 15, "an agent of positive change."

Matlock joined La-Z-Boy as an associate rep in 1973 and in 1977 was assigned the Arizona and Las Vegas territory, where sales have nearly doubled every five years.

He was involved in the development and operation of La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries stores, with the first such unit opening in Las Vegas in 1989. His territory has included some of La-Z-Boy's top-performing stores.

In his new post, he reports to John Case, president of La-Z-Boy Branded Product.

Reporting to Matlock are Doug Collier, vice president of marketing; Ken Salm, vice president of sales; Greg White, vice president of merchandising; and Blaine Stout, vice president, general manager of La-Z-Boy Retail.

"We are excited about the invaluable hands-on experience Steve brings to this role," said Case. "Steve's success over the years, his experience in opening proprietary stores, combined with his knowledge of the industry and his reputation among both the sales force and our dealer organization, make him the ideal choice for this job."

La-Z-Boy, the nation's second-largest furniture maker, is looking to rebound from sales declines. In its third quarter ended Jan. 24, its sales were down 3.6% from a year earlier, and for the nine months ended Jan. 24 were down 7.4%.

La-Z-Boy has recognized Matlock's sales success over the years with numerous honors and awards, including the Edward M. Knabusch Memorial Award, which recognizes reps who epitomize the high personal and professional standards set by the late La-Z-Boy co-founder.
