Z-Tex hopes to turn scents into dollars

CHICAGO — Z-Tex has new fabrics that appeal not only to the senses of sight and touch, but also smell.
At Showtime in High Point this month, the converter of cotton plains, ducks and twills introduced fabrics with microencapsulated fragrances.
President John Zita said the initial five fragrances — lavender, ylang ylang, eucalyptus, jasmine and juniper — are available in the company's Metropolis and Cobblestone cotton fabrics and add about $1.50 per yard to the finished goods, which are about $6 per yard without the scents.
Dan Baker, sales manager, said the response was "awesome. We had a lot of fun with it during the show. Everybody was scratching and sniffing."
Angie Brehm, product manager, said other fragrances are available for an additional charge, including strawberry, lemon, orange, apple, peppermint, coffee, pineapple, pizza, chocolate, chamomile, cola lime, banana, wildflowers, rose, forest, ambrosia, Fiji, bouquet, tropical paradise, geranium, eau de cologne, sandalwood and pine.
Literature from the supplier of the scents includes accreditation by the International Fragrance Assn. and the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials and assessments that conclude the material has no health or safety issues and does not cause skin irritation.
