Contemporary sets the mood
Carole Sloan -- Furniture Today, January 25, 2004
FRANKFURT, Germany — Retro '50s contemporary made news at the Heimtextil fabric show here this month, both in wovens and prints.
But the color palette was more toned-down than the originals, albeit still on the bright side. The influence of Marimekko of old and its current upsurge in design clearly has affected designers in the contemporary mood.
In contrast, lush, elegant fabrics dominated the traditional side of the market here with silks in luxurious weaves and prints abundant.
In wovens, intricate and unusual constructions were showstoppers at a number of stands, especially among the Italians. Colors shone with gold and spicy orange influences among the typical European tendency for reds. Browns, in rich chocolatey shades, also were frequently used.
