IDC: Semiconductor sales to grow

Framingham, Mass. — If computer sales are truly an indication for small office/home office furniture, then 2004 could be the start of something good.
According to the research firm IDC, the worldwide semiconductor market will grow 18% in 2004.
Of course, semiconductors are the chips that make computers as smart as they are; semiconductor sales rates are an indication of future computer sales, as well as for mobile phones and other digital devices.
In the SOHO business in both the residential and contract markets, producers have held that desk sales would pick up again once businesses and consumers resumed spending on computers.
Certainly during the SOHO boom from 1995 to 2000, the "attachment" rate for RTA workstations was a critical component of sales when consumers were buying new machines.
And IDC says 2004 won't be a one-hit wonder. Semiconductor revenue reached $160 billion in 2003, and after a very strong 2004, the semiconductor market will settle down to a compound annual growth rate of 12%, with revenue reaching $282 billion in 2008, according to IDC.
PC shipments reached 152 million units in 2003, and IDC expects unit shipments to grow more than 10% this year.
