Showcasing America's design spirit

NEW YORK — NEW YORK — Bloomingdale's launched a major home furnishings promotion last week at its flagship store here, "The New American Spirit," spotlighting American design.
A key element in the program, which embraces all home areas, is an exclusive 27-piece furniture statement, The America Collection. The collection, inspired by the archives of the American Folk Art Museum, was designed by designer-author Tricia Foley and is made by Henredon.
Important pieces include a demilune console, a buffet interpreted as an entertainment center, and a carved and reeded four-poster bed. The case pieces are finished in mahogany, painted putty and rubbed black and distressed cream.
The collection celebrates "the wealth of craftsmanship that originated in this country," said Lester Gribetz, Bloomingdale's vice president of home furnishings fashion.
The New American Spirit promotion offers other furniture in addition to the museum collection, presented in a model home on the furniture floor.
Bloomingdale's Ray Brandt, vice president and furniture fashion director, created a Campaign collection with a contemporary twist — a living room and dining room in rosewood with lots of detailing, and with the storage necessary for 21st century living.
Ralph Lauren designed the Chartwell living room and dining room furniture, another Bloomingdale's exclusive, with an Edwardian influence. Noteworthy is the sofa, with a $16,000 price tag.
Ferguson Copeland was represented with the Larry Laslo-designed Modern Classic Moods collection, with a dining room and living room designed by Laslo. The rooms are "all about texture; it feels nice," said Laslo. "It's user friendly."
Adjacent to the furniture presentation in the model home is an antiques shop featuring one-of-a-kind pieces and reproductions of accessories from the Federal period.
The New American Spirit theme was translated into tabletop with new offerings by Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang and Kate Spade, and into home textiles with collections from Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Hudson Park and Calvin Klein.
