'Wonderful thing' for U.S. industry

GAFFNEY, S.C. — GAFFNEY, S.C.— Scalamandré's move to South Carolina is an example of what entrepreneurs can do to save the U.S. textile industry, said Richard Downing, president of Metropolis Fabrics here.
"This is a wonderful thing for the American textile industry," he said. "We have merged our capabilities in what we know will be a sustainable textile manufacturing operation for years to come."
Downing is an investment partner with Scalamandré's Bitter brothers. His company has operated here since 1991.
"Mark's goal was to keep his operation in America where he could compete favorably with foreign competitors, maintain the high quality on which Scalamandré has built its reputation, and keep the tradition of Southern textile making alive," Downing said.
"Creating a textile manufacturing enterprise in the midst of all the gloom and doom shows there are always ways to succeed in hard times," he said.
