Three bedding makers choose Elk FR barrier

DALLAS — DALLAS — Elk Technologies, the first supplier of fire-resistant mattress materials to announce customers, said three more bedding makers have chosen its VersaShield fire-barrier technology.
The new customers are Capitol City Mattress Co. of Tennessee, McRoskey Airflex Mattress Co. of California, and American Bedding Co. of Georgia. They join Carolina Mattress Guild of Thomasville, N.C., which last year became the first bedding producer to introduce an FR line.
Elk, based here, said the three new customers will use VersaShield fire-barrier technology in selected bedding lines.
Next month, Capitol City Mattress plans to launch VersaShield in seven models in its Fluffo line, offering a FR mattress as an optional upgrade. Matt Harper, sales and research/development manager for Capitol City, said the Elk product was chosen because it performed well in testing.
McRoskey Airflex's goal is to incorporate FR protection in all residential mattresses by June, said Mary Sharkey, vice president of manufacturing.
Pending additional testing, Sharkey said the VersaShield technology will be used on the sides of all mattresses.
American Bedding chose VersaShield technology, said President Tom Mundy, in part because of the ease of incorporating it into its manufacturing.
Elk said it has tested successfully more than 100 different configurations of mattress constructions with VersaShield, making it "one of the most thoroughly documented fire-retardant solutions available to the sleep products industry."
