L&P shows burning desire for consistency

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, March 21, 2004

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Leggett & Platt turns up the heat to make sure its fire-resistant products are doing their job.

The company's Textile & Fiber Products Division has devised a quality-assurance test that it uses on a regular basis. It takes samples from rolls of its Pyro-Gon high-loft fibers and trains blowtorch-like heat on them. Temperature sensors at the source of the flames and on the other side of the barrier see how well the barrier repels the heat and flames.

A recent test conducted here for Furniture/Today revealed that a sample of Pyro-Gon fibers was subjected to a fire generating more than 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit of heat. Only a fraction of that heat, 195 degrees, made it through the barrier after 90 seconds of direct flames.

L&P conducts the tests to insure the consistency of its FR products, said Karl Van Becelaere, executive vice president of the division. The tests came out of the division's research and development facilities in Nashville, Tenn., headed by Steve Ogle, vice president of R&D.

"Inch by inch and yard by yard, it is the same quality product," Ogle said of the company's Pyro-Gon FR products. The tests insure that, he added.

Underwriters Laboratories, a leading, independent testing lab, is reviewing the test protocols developed by L&P. The two companies may team up to offer a UL certification program for L&P's FR products, Van Becelaere said, which would assure consistent quality.

California's open-flame flammability standard is a test of the finished bedding. L&P officials said that properly designed mattresses with Pyro-Gon FR protection have passed the California test.
