Futon makers hit trends

HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — Futon producers are hitting the hot trends in specialty sleep, showing a growing array of visco-elastic cushioned models.
Futon leader Gold Bond has scored with its Visco Opulence futon, which compresses 22 inches of support materials into a 12-inch thick futon, with two layers of visco foam.
"We are selling hundreds and hundreds of those futons each week," said President Bob Naboicheck. "The comfort is there."
At the Futon and Specialty Sleep Expo, Gold Bond is introducing a new visco and latex-cushioned futon targeting the $499 price point in full, a new top price point for the company.
Naboicheck said the strong values and comfort offered in today's futons will keep that category a vital one on retail floors.
"Consumers are demanding visco," said John Roma, executive vice president of futon maker Otis Bed Mfg., which brought out its second visco-cushioned futon at the San Francisco market earlier this year.
Overall, Roma sees the specialty sleep category as "definitely on the upswing. There is a strong awareness of the advantages of comfort."
Cannon Sleep Products produces futon and traditional sleep sets, utilizing everything from innersprings to visco foams and latex foams.
"I see an increase in the specialty sleep category as a whole," said Bruce Glassman, Cannon's sales manager. "Tempur-Pedic started it by talking about a new way to sleep. The consumers have been asking for it."
What they are asking for, he said, is "specialty sleep — or the components of specialty sleep."
