Sealy's specialty push
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, March 21, 2004
TRINITY, N.C. — TRINITY, N.C.— Sealy, the world's largest bedding producer, is rolling out some new alternative bedding products later this year.
"We are developing alternative product offerings and designs for launch in 2004, which we will discuss with our key retailers at the April High Point market," said Dave McIlquham, Sealy's president and chief executive officer.
He commented in response to a question from Furniture/Today about what Sealy is doing to pursue opportunities in the specialty sleep category.
"As the market leader," McIlquham said, "Sealy has expanded our market share through ongoing development of new technologies and the successful introduction of innovative, consumer-preferred products. To that end, we already use specialty materials such as latex and visco-elastic foams in select models of the new Sealy Posturepedic UniCased and the Stearns & Foster TripLCased lines."
McIlquham also offered his thoughts on the growth prospects for specialty sleep.
"Specialty bedding leaders Select Comfort and Tempur-Pedic have generated strong sales growth behind their heavy consumer advertising investment and marketing programs," he said. "They are creating more interest and demand for these type of products than has ever been created before, while expanding their retail distribution.
"The number of competitive offerings will increase in this product category as other manufacturers respond to the consumer interest and attempt to protect their retail space."
