TUPELO, Miss. — TUPELO, Miss. — The Tupelo Furniture Market honored Billy Phillips Jr., president of Queen City Furniture, Greenville Miss., with its National Buyer Appreciation Award.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour presented the award to Phillips and his father, Billy Phillips Sr.
Queen City is only the second Mississippi retailer to receive the twice-a-year award in the event's 15-year history. Chip Miskelly and Miskelly Furniture, Jackson, Miss., were honored in 1998.
Queen City Furniture, a full-line furniture and appliance retailer founded in 1939, operates five stores and two warehouses in Mississippi and Arkansas. After World War II, the store started route sales (door-to-door selling), a technique it still uses today.
The younger Phillips, who followed his father into the business in 1979, was named retailer of the year by the Southeastern Home Furnishings Assn. in 1998 and by the Mississippi Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. in 1999. He is a former president of the Southeastern Home Furnishings Assn.
