George, Kathwari to be honored by ADL

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 14, 2004

New York— Two innovative and successful home furnishings retailers, Judy George and Farooq Kathwari, will be honored in May by the Anti-Defamation League's National Interior Furnishings & Design Division.

George, founder and CEO of Norwood, Mass.-based Domain Furniture, will receive this year's American Heritage Award.

Kathwari, chairman, president and CEO of Danbury, Conn.-based Ethan Allen, will receive the Humanitarian Award.

Both will be honored for their long commitment to the humanitarian goals of civil rights and justice. They will be recognized at a dinner May 19 at the Grand Hyatt New York.

George had a vision of what a furniture store should look and feel like, then did extensive consumer research before she opened her first Domain store in 1986. Today, the chain has 30 stores and last year ranked 79th on Furniture/Today's Top 100.

Ethan Allen was already a national presence when Kathwari became president in 1985 and chairman and CEO in 1988, but he has led a reinvention of the company to introduce a broader assortment of styles and an updated look to stores.

Today, the retailer and manufacturer is one of the industry's largest and most profitable companies, and holds the No. 3 spot on the Top 100.

Norman Waxman of Schna-dig is the industry chairman for the ADL event; Neil Goldberg of Raymour & Flanigan, Liverpool, N.Y., is the dinner chairman; and Fred Berk of Robb & Stucky, Fort Myers, Fla., and Fred Friedman of Carls, Coconut Creek, Fla., are vice chairmen.

For more information, contact Judith Master, ADL's director of corporate development, at (212) 885-7857 or jmaster@adl.org.
