SF moving to Wed.-Sat run
By Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, March 14, 2004
SAN FRANCISCO — SAN FRANCISCO— The San Francisco Furniture Market, which altered its schedule in January to avoid overlapping the Super Bowl, has decided to adopt permanently the new Wednesday-through-Saturday format beginning in January 2005.
The change, which affects the San Francisco Mart and other nearby showroom buildings, was made after buyers and exhibitors reacted positively to what was intended to be a one-time experiment in January.
Mart officials said a February e-mail survey of buyers showed that 57% preferred a schedule that includes a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Mart's board of governors, its retail advisory board, and the Western Home Furnishings Assn. also supported the change, said Roseann Carini, SFM's general manager.
"The data from our buyer survey and the traffic patterns at the winter market confirms the general feedback that we're receiving," she said. "With the majority of buyers and our board supporting the change, it is the right thing to do."
The new schedule takes effect in January 2005, when the market begins Wednesday, Jan. 19 and concludes Saturday, Jan. 22. The July 2005 dates are Wednesday, July 20 through Saturday, July 23.
Carini said the July 2004 show will have to remain on a Friday-through-Monday format (July 16-19) because previously scheduled conventions in San Francisco have tied up many of the hotel rooms that would be needed for furniture market visitors.
Mart officials said the World Market Center in Las Vegas, which plans its first furniture market for July 18-22, 2005, was not a factor in the schedule change.
