Furniture debuts in Penney N.Y. store

NEW YORK — Furniture made its debut for JCPenney last month in the New York market, with home theater at center stage, in the department store's new unit at Queens Center here.
The 200,000-square-foot store replaced a 137,000-square-foot unit in the same center. Home furnishings is a major beneficiary of the expanded space, occupying 17% of the total, or 34,000 square feet, up from 8,000 square feet in the former store. Furniture alone now occupies 7,300 square feet.
In furniture, the major home theater statement greets customers at the department's entrance, where four different approaches to using upholstered furniture and wall units are illustrated. All are designed to attract mainstream customers with popular pricing.
Suppliers in home theater upholstery are PeopLoungers and Klaussner.
Also featured is the JCPenney Home Collection, in upholstery and particularly in case goods.
Living room, including merchandise from Broyhill, is offered in additional room settings.
Dining room is shown in vignettes.
The bedding department, with merchandise from Sealy, Serta and Spring Air, displays each mattress with a decorative bed.
In addition to furniture, housewares, lamps, accessories, pictures and clocks have been added to the merchandise mix in the larger store, and home textiles has been dramatically expanded.
The new store is JCPenney's largest in the metro New York market. Although consumers were underserved in furniture and other home merchandise in the former store, it was among the company's top-performing units, with one of the highest sales per square foot figures, said Jeff Owen, New York store manager. The bigger store could challenge the San Juan, Puerto Rico, unit, currently Penney's top sales-producing unit, he said.
Other store features include such touches as shopping carts in the home area, special Penney shopping bags for other departments, wider aisles, improved lighting and more accessible customer service centers.
The store has the most diverse customer base and store staff in the company, with 29 ethnicities represented. Over 2 million people live in a five-mile radius from the unit.
