Deslee ticking contains aloe vera, scent

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, April 18, 2004

Tired of the same old mattress ticking? Perhaps you'd like to try ticking treated with aloe vera.

Deslee Textiles, a Belgian ticking producer with a mill in Inman, S.C., has a line of mattress tickings that offer everything from the healing power of aloe vera to the fragrant smell of lavender oil.

"Bedding producers like to tell a story," said Eric Delaby, vice president of sales and marketing for Deslee Textiles USA, the company's U.S. arm. "When consumers walk in a retail store, all mattresses look the same. They want something different."

Something like aloe vera. "Micro molecules" embed the substance in the mattress ticking, said Delaby, who adds, "Aloe vera speaks well to female consumers."

"Scientific research has clearly demonstrated the beneficial action of aloe vera on the skin," the company says in its marketing materials. "A mattress fabric treated with aloe vera is not just very pleasant to sleep on, it's also very effective at the energy level." The result of "better energy balance" is that consumers sleep better, according to the company.

The aloe vera-treated ticking is part of the company's Wellness collection, which also includes ticking that smells sweet and ticking that attacks unpleasant odors.

Deslee's Breeze product uses micro molecules to absorb unpleasant odors. As soon as the mattress fabric comes into contact with body moisture or heat, the odors are absorbed. When the molecules are saturated, a simple wash of the fabric is enough to clear them and reactivate them, the company says.

The Dreamfield product uses micro molecules to embed capsules of lavender oil in the ticking. "Deslee Textiles discovered that the beneficial effects of aromatherapy can act even during sleep, through building in micro capsules of essential oils in the mattress fabric," the company says. "During the night they give off a subtle aroma which has a beneficial impact on sleep."

CoolMax is another Wellness collection product. Made from Dacron, it is highly permeable by air and has a high heat-regulating capacity. It dries faster than other more absorbent fabrics, helping people sleep in dry and comfortable surroundings, Deslee says.

Deslee began production at its South Carolina facility in 2002 and has expanded its operations since then, Delaby said.
