Hickson-Smith signed as Lane store spokeswoman

TUPELO, Miss. — Lane Home Furnishings is aiming squarely at young home-decorating-oriented consumers by signing Laurie Hickson-Smith as spokeswoman for its fledgling freestanding store program.
Hickson-Smith, who lives in Jackson, Miss., and has does some consulting for Lane, was one of the first designers on "Trading Spaces," a top-rated cable TV show on The Learning Channel that begins its fourth season this fall. The show's premise is to redecorate a room for less than $1,000 in 48 hours.
Skipper Holliman, Lane's executive vice president of sales and marketing, said Hickson-Smith is a perfect fit because she will bring "instant recognition and credibility with the female consumer."
"Consumers can identify with her and appreciate her designing talent," he said. "This is an exciting chapter in Lane's history and we feel strongly that we have all the right pieces in place to take Lane to the next level."
Hickson-Smith was in Lane's High Point market showroom on Sunday, April 18, when the company held its market sales meeting. She may attend some store openings as well, the company said.
Lane currently has freestanding stores in Canada and one in Tupelo. Two more stores are expected to open within the next three months, in Fresno, Calif., and Las Vegas. Another is set to open in Philadelphia by the end of 2004.
