IKEA partners with college

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Specialty retailer Ikea has partnered with Gateway Community College here to help ensure that New Haven residents can compete in the local work force.
The Top 100 store, which soon will open its first Connecticut store here, contributed $100,000 to the college so residents who want to pursue careers in retailing can receive free training and professional development workshops.
Ikea consulted with Gateway on job skills needed for positions at Ikea. The curriculum for the community workshops included training in customer service, business communications, computer skills and computer basics for online job applications.
Workshops took place in February and March in local neighborhood locations. Future workshops are planned.
"Early in the development of our store here, we expressed an interest in providing insight to help the college and community," said Joseph Roth, the retailer's director of expansion public affairs. "We're excited to partner with Gateway Community College and help bring to life this collaborative program in advance of our actual recruitment effort.
"We hope this initiative will be beneficial to local residents interested in applying for positions when our New Haven store opens this summer, and helps anyone interested in expanding their skills and furthering their retail expertise," Roth said.
