Global has crotch mahogany look

HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT— Case goods importer Global Furniture is showing a new collection here with the look of crotch veneers, but constructed in solid mahogany.
Savannah River includes 22 plantation-style pieces for bedroom, dining room and home entertainment, made in Indonesia from plantation-grown solid mahogany.
The key to the collection is a finishing process Global calls "enhanced-grain solid mahogany."
President Jack DeBonis said Global is the first company to use the process, which mirrors the look of crotch mahogany.
A film transfer is applied to the solid mahogany prior to finishing. When applied, the film bonds to the wood and to the finish, "tattooing" the grain pattern of crotch mahogany into the wood fiber.
"This is not a veneer," DeBonis said. "We see this as taking the solid-wood story to the next level of eye appeal."
Global has received early commitments from key retailers and is cutting the group. It will be available by Memorial Day.
As an example of anticipated retail pricing, DeBonis said that when purchased in full containers, a dresser, mirror, sleigh bed and chest can retail for $1,999. He suggested that a crotch mahogany bedroom typically retails for $3,995.
"We bring the look without the negatives of crotch mahogany, such as finding the right lay up when matching patterns (for) better consistency and control of look," he said.
He added the technique reflects a typical decorating practice among the antebellum plantations that inspired Savannah River.
"Traveling artisans used to be commissioned to go into these plantations homes and draw wood grains onto the bland woods like poplar and cedar that they used to build the homes," he said.
