Home Collection debuts Verellen upholstery line

By Gary Evans -- Furniture Today, April 18, 2004

HIGH POINT— An upholstery maker here has launched a collection of deep, high-backed seating under a new company name, Verellen Home Collection. The company was founded in 1999 as The Home Collection by owner Tom Verellen.

The new Manon upholstery was designed by Craig Staton with angular lines and oversized pieces in a casually elegant look. Included are a sofa, condo sofa, chair-and-a-half and chair. Standard sofas are 95 inches to 98 inches and retail for $2,700 on up.

The line debuted earlier this month at the New York gift show. At the High Point market, the company shows at 212 N. Wrenn St.

"We're bringing a very European feel to the category," Verellen said, adding the style will provide an alternative to contemporary leather and overstuffed seating. Down-core cushions make for soft, comfortable seating, he said.

A high-backed dining chair features a form-fitted slipcover with washable, Belgian linen fabric in eight colors, from undyed flax to café noir. A low-backed chair has a loose-fitting, casual slipcover, giving it a draped and wrinkled look. Verellen said Manon's club chair sits like a chair-and-a-half, with arms low to the ground and deep seating.

Other new pieces include an entertainment center and computer work station from the Horizon collection; a dining, end and coffee table from the Plank collection, which features tongue-and-grove joinery and a stainless steel base; and a stackable chair from the Stripe collection in teak and powder-coated galvanized steel.

Verellen said the company name was changed to infuse brand personality into the line of organic modern furniture.

"We want to bring a personal identity to the brand," he said. "We finish every piece of our furniture in High Point, and our upholstery is made here from start to finish. We never ship directly from our factory overseas."

The company has permanent showrooms in High Point and at the Los Angeles Design Center, and has manufacturing and distribution space here as well as distribution in Los Angeles.
