WithIt, YHFE set conference
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2004
GREENSBORO, N.C . — Two industry groups, the Young Home Furnishings Executives and Women in the Home Industries Today, have set their 2004 Leadership Conference for Feb. 4-5 at the Airport Marriott here.
The program, under the banner "Facing Challenge and Change Through Leadership Excellence," will feature seminars, coaching and group work sessions facilitated by Greensboro-based Staub Leadership Consultants, centered on Staub's Whole Hearted Leadership Model.
The model uses seven key elements to help individuals achieve success in their personal and professional lives. The elements include building trusting relationships, exhibiting commitment to work and developing strong interpersonal and technical skills.
Effective communication skills will be taught, including listening non-defensively, respectful confrontation and designing and delivering messages of appreciation in the workplace. The value of mentoring and how to help foster various workplace skills will be discussed.
Finally, participants will develop an action plan that will help them carry out lessons learned at the conference over the next six to 12 months.
Moderators will include Mary Kendrick, a senior facilitator with Staub who has many years of experience as a cultural diversity trainer, and Bill Lynagh, a health care consultant who also has done consulting in the furniture industry.
In addition to WithIt and YHFE members, the event is open to other industry professionals.
"We want to encourage anyone in the home furnishings industry in a leadership role, or who is responsible for training future leaders, to come to the conference," said YHFE President Richard Tomkins, vice president of sales and marketing at Cresent Fine Furniture.
Conference sponsors include Furniture Brands International, Culp, The Robert Allen Group, Lane Home Furnishings, Sealy, Simmons, Berkline, BenchCraft and La-Z-Boy.
The cost is $550 for WithIt and YHFE members and $650 for non-members.
