Mad cow not a concern
Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2004
HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — The first case of mad cow disease reported in the United States left most leather exhibitors at Showtime unfazed.
"It could cause a ripple because the availability of less hides worldwide would send those who import from the U.S. in search of a new source," said Eklain England, director of sales and marketing for Arpel Leather.
But Bob Wilson, president of Anthem Leather, said that reaction to the U.S. case, so far involving a single cow in Washington state, is different from the wider outbreak in Britain in 2001.
"The government is handling it better here. I haven't had one person ask about it," Wilson said.
At Indigo, Eduardo Andres, vice president of sales and marketing, said, "We hope not to be in the same position as three years ago. It would be a little disaster."
Giovanni Guidi, president of Euroleather, was not overly alarmed: "We've had worse than this."
