Stickley set to begin $6M plant expansion

MANLIUS, N.Y. — Full-line high-end manufacturer Stickley is set to begin a $6 million expansion at its case goods plant here. The move is expected to add 30 workers, bringing total employment here to almost 1,000.
A 30,000-square-foot warehouse anchors the expansion. That facility, which should be completed in June, will allow Stickley's existing 60,000-square-foot warehouse to accommodate an expanded finishing operation, plus additional production space.
The project also includes new equipment for the plant's rough mill, and the conversion of a former showroom, recently relocated, into Stickley's corporate headquarters.
The expansion was prompted by Stickley's mid-2002 purchase of John Widdicomb division, and the anticipation of strong sales in 2004.
"When we bought John Widdicomb, we moved production from Michigan (to Manlius)," said Amini Audi, president of Stickley's retail division. "And we've been blessed to have experienced good growth."
Even before December sales were in, Audi said sales were up 8% in 2003.
"We're projecting a good year in 2004, and we laid the groundwork in 2003," Stickley President Alfred Audi said. "We hoping to double that increase this year."
Construction of the new warehouse and renovation of the existing facility is ready to start immediately. "We've already awarded the contracts, and the permitting is in place," said Amini Audi.
Because of its commitment to manufacturing in New York, Stickley is eligible for a $500,000 state grant for the purchase of machinery.
