Sklar Peppler founders honored

TORONTO — The four brothers who founded what is today Sklar Peppler Furniture are this year's recipients of the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Assn.'s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award will be presented Sunday evening, Jan. 11, at a gala honoring the winners of the second annual Canadian Home Furnishings Awards.
In 1945, Harry Sklar founded a company manufacturing children's upholstered rocking chairs in a 700-square-foot building in downtown Toronto.
He soon was joined by brothers Joe and Sam and later by youngest brother Lou.
They began producing full-size upholstery in 1947 and 20 years later, with an annual volume of about C$9 million, were believed to be Canada's largest furniture maker.
Hugh Owen, OFMA president, said the Sklars were chosen for the award because they were innovators in the industry in the decades following the war. Sklar was the first Canadian furniture producer to use assembly line manufacturing. As design leaders and aggressive marketers, Sklar became the first name-brand furniture sold in Canada.
