Culp chenilles feature Marquesa Plush yarn

HIGH POINT — Culp is introducing an exclusive line of chenille performance fabrics at Showtime here this week — the first-ever chenille constructions using American Fibers & Yarns' Marquesa Plush yarn.
Liam Waters, design leader for textures at Culp Decorative Fabrics, said the initial collection includes about 20 patterns of chenille fabrics at prices that range from $4.50 for body cloths to about $6.95 for pillow patterns.
Waters said Culp was drawn to the performance story of the Marquesa Plush modified yarn — which is solution-dyed, lightfast, colorfast, durable, abrasion-resistant, stain- and soil-resistant and bleach-cleanable — but also to its aesthetic properties. "The yarn is totally non-sparkle. It has the look of a ring-spun acrylic."
"Marquesa Plush is a brand-new modified manmade fiber and we like it because it is inherently cleanable," Waters said. "Most of the so-called performance fabrics being advertised these days require an applied finish to make them performance fabrics, but Marquesa Plush doesn't need any finish."
Waters said Culp will use marketing tools like brilliant red and blue Marquesa Plush yarn in a glass bottle of pure chlorine bleach, samples of Marquesa Plush chenille fabrics that have been stained and cleaned, and hangtags to get the message across about the yarn's characteristics.
"We will also have hangtags available for retailers to use as well," Waters said.
Marquesa Plush made a successful launch last year in velvet constructions from Joan Fabrics.
"Having Culp extend the Marquesa Plush brand into chenilles is an important milestone in our technology development efforts," said Michael Apperson, chief executive officer of AF&Y.
He added that one plus for the yarn is that "there is no need for fabrics to be coated with environmentally sensitive chemicals."
