New Sklar galleries boost Sears Home's upholstery presence
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2004
TORONTO — Sears Canada has rolled out Sklar Peppler Design Centres in each of its 46 freestanding Sears Home stores.
The centers feature six to eight frames in a 1,500-square-foot presentation that also offers over 500 fabrics and colors as well as leather. Also offered are two levels of cushion firmness — soft and relaxed "casual comfort" or comfortable but firm "firm support." The fabric-to-frame combinations are exclusive to Sears Canada.
Bruce Watton, national business manager/furniture for Sears Canada, said adding a Sklar gallery is part of a merchandising strategy designed to maximize custom upholstery business.
"We wanted to create an alliance with the No. 1 furniture brand in Canada," he said. "It gives the customer a much wider choice and gives us a broader custom business."
"The Sklar Peppler Design Centres take custom choice to a new level," said Gerry Modjeski, executive vice president of Sklar Peppler. "Comfort is paramount in choosing a sofa a chair. Some people have back problems and prefer a firmer or ridged seat, while younger casual shoppers like a sofa that they can sink into. Providing a choice of firmness ensures that customers take home a piece that is perfect for them."
Although officially rolled out in November, the design centers have been in test mode is early summer. "Sales have been very good," Watton reported.
