N.Y. textiles show sets dates back to October
Susan M. Andrews -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2004
New York — The New York Home Textiles Show is shifting back to October dates for its 2005 show to bring it in line with other early fall shows in the city, even though it will create an overlap with the fall 2005 International Home Furnishings Market in High Point.
The textile show will be held Sunday, Oct. 16, through Wednesday, Oct. 19, instead of previously announced dates in September 2005, according to show manager George Little Management and the Home Fashion Product Assn.
"An October market fits the traditional timing of the home textiles industry and is consistent with the dates already published for markets over the next several years," said Frank Foley, president of HFPA.
The furniture market in High Point is set for Oct. 20-27, 2005, but does significant business during the three days before the official opening day of Thursday.
Holly Koenig, a staff associate at HFPA, said an informal survey of the association's board members, including companies such as WestPoint Stevens and Springs, clearly showed that the October dates were preferred despite the potential conflict with the furniture market.
"They know it overlaps but they still want October, and we hope retailers can do both. It's difficult not to overlap, between the Jewish and other holidays and wanting to coordinate the show with available dates for the Javits Center (for temporary exhibitors). It's better for us to have the market week in October," Koenig said.
"Actually, we are very pleased and have 100% complete support from our board for the change. The decision wasn't taken lightly. We think it will be a success and will be beneficial to our customers and to the members of our association as well as the Javits exhibitors to keep the market weeks together."
