SCFMA amends membership criteria

HIGH POINT — HIGH POINT — The Summer and Casual Furniture Manufacturers Assn. has amended its membership criteria to admit certain companies that produce outdoor furnishings outside the United States.
SCFMA's parent organization, the American Furniture Manufacturers Assn., also is examining the possibility of membership for offshore manufacturers.
Eligibility for SCFMA membership still requires a company to be incorporated in the United States and to have been manufacturing or selling furniture for at least two years.
"This change will enlarge and strengthen the membership of the SCFMA," said Joseph Logan, executive director. The SCFMA Board of Directors endorsed expanding the association's membership at a meeting in January, although the AFMA's board didn't approve the change until May 7.
Andy Counts, AFMA's CEO, said a subcommittee will be named to review the AFMA's membership requirements as well.
"Over the next several months, our subcommittee will work to determine whether opportunities for collaboration might exist among foreign manufacturers of furniture and home accents," Counts said.
The panel is expected to make recommendations to the board at the AFMA Annual Meeting Nov. 4-6 in Sea Island, Ga.
The new SCFMA membership criteria are effective immediately. Companies that manufacture outdoor furnishings outside the United States and would like to consider membership in SCFMA can call (336) 884-5000, ext. 106, for further information.
SCFMA represents more than 80 manufacturers of summer and casual products.
