Sealy helps lead community canned-food drive

Trinity, N.C. — To support needy families during the holidays, bedding major Sealy Inc. again partnered with a local Fox television affiliate, WGHP-TV, and The Salvation Army to coordinate a large-scale regional canned-food drive.
Sealy said the second annual Triad Holiday Challenge brought in nearly 50,000 non-perishable food and personal care products for The Salvation Army's local food pantries, a 233% increase over last year's effort in which 15,000 items were collected.
The Triad Holiday Challenge was initiated in 2002 to supplement the canned food drive that takes place each year at the Sealy/Fox8 Holiday Concerts in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, N.C. Admission to the concerts is free with a food donation, but Sealy developed the program further by dedicating the entire holiday season to the collection of food for those in need.
"We are overwhelmed by the level of participation in this year's Triad Holiday Challenge and couldn't be happier with the results," said Dave McIlquham, president and chief executive officer of Sealy. "Nearly all of the companies that participated in 2002 helped out again, and many new organizations came on board this year."
As it did in 2002, Sealy challenged local companies, schools and organizations to bring in as much food as possible before the holiday concerts. Twenty-seven companies, with a combined employee base of nearly 15,000, participated in the food drive.
Several bedding suppliers were involved, including Bekaert Textiles, Culp and Leggett & Platt. Also on board this year was new Sealy/Fox8 Holiday Concerts' co-sponsor Old Dominion Freight Line, which provided transportation for all collected goods.
Sealy employees brought in 12,300 cans of food, more than any other company.
