Carter taps Hirschhaut

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 22, 2003

iDesign, an upholstery company launched two years ago by Bruce Hirschhaut, has merged with contemporary upholstery maker Carter Furniture, and Hirschhaut has been named vice president of marketing and sales, a new post at Carter.

He is responsible for merchandising the upholstery line plus expanding Carter's customer base of independent furniture stores, contemporary specialty stores and department stores.

"We are pleased to have someone of Bruce's caliber join our company," said Carter President Bill Ward. "Bruce will take over product development and the building of Carter's brand awareness.

"We intend to utilize world-class designers to position Carter as a leading resource of high-style seating, and we see the innovative styling at iDesign as an ideal complement to our existing line," Ward added.

Trained as a furniture designer, Hirschhaut worked for several case goods makers before becoming director of design at sofa-sleeper specialist Sealy of Maryland. He established his own design business in High Point in 1986, and was tapped by German leather upholstery resource W. Schillig in 1997 as chief operating officer to expand its U.S. distribution.
