Three groups — one mission

The symphony that is the bedding industry reflects the melodies composed by three different groups. Each plays its own unique notes, but together they make sweet music.

The tune starts with the bedding producers, who skillfully combine a wide variety of materials into the rectangles that provide years of comfort. Then the retailers take over, providing the sales floors where the finished beds are displayed. Finally the retail sales associates work their magic, matching the right bed with the right consumer.

As you look through this Bedding Yearbook, we hope you appreciate the contributions made by each of those groups. We have brought together key information from each of those three segments to give you a comprehensive overview of the bedding industry's performance. And it's all in this handy report, which we hope you will keep at your fingertips as you plan for a solid year in 2004.

We've pulled from the best of our bedding offerings this year to create this Bedding Yearbook. The issue contains the highlights of a dozen bedding reports published in 2003.

On the manufacturing side, we have our list of the Top 10 Bedding Producers. If you can't remember how big a lead Sealy has over the rest of the field, this is the place to look. We also provide breakouts of the various brands marketed by the majors. There you'll see how well Stearns & Foster did last year.

On the retail front, we include our listing of the Top 25 Bedding Retailers. There you'll see how Select Comfort has lengthened its lead over the rest of the bedding field.

We also provide an analysis of the major retail channels of distribution. Which has had the strongest growth over the years? We've got the answer for you.

We are also pleased to bring back some of the top retail sales associates in the country for a final bow. These hardworking men and women explain in their words how they sell high-end bedding. If you are a retail salesperson, you need to listen carefully to what they have to say. These folks can help you make a lot more money.

Last, but certainly not least, we examine one of the most important issues to hit our industry in many years: mattress flammability. We present the key information any retailer needs to quickly get up to speed on this issue. Our glossary, timeline and question-and-answer presentation will put you on the inside track to becoming an expert on flammability.
