Consumers boosting spending on luxury bedding

David Perry -- Furniture Today, November 23, 2003

High Point — Consumers are demonstrating a growing appetite for high-end bedding.

Furniture/Today's latest Consumer Buying Trends Survey, completed earlier this year, found that a total of 16% of U.S. households spent $1,000 or more for a bed in 2002. The breakdown: 10% of the households reported spending from $1,000 to $1,499 on bedding, while 6% reported spending $1,500 or more.

Those numbers showed slight growth from the bedding spending levels in 2000, which Furniture/Today assessed in a Consumer Buying Trends Survey completed early the following year. In 2000, a total of 14% of the households reported spending $1,000 or more on a set of bedding. At that time, 9% of the households reported spending from $1,000 to $1,499 on a sleep set, with 5% reporting spending of $1,500 or more.

A comparison of the 2001 and 2003 consumer surveys shows that consumers are now more likely to continue spending more for their sleep set. The percentage of households planning to spend $1,000 or more for bedding in 2003 is the same as the percentage that did spend that amount in 2002.

That wasn't the case with the 2001 survey, which showed a significant dropoff in the number of consumers planning to buy high-end bedding in 2001, compared to the number who actually purchased high-end bedding in 2000, 11% and 14% respectively.

The fact that consumers now say they are planning to maintain their commitment to high-end bedding demonstrates that the category has attained more credibility with consumers, according to bedding observers.
