High Point — Bedding sales leader Sealy posted another strong year in 2002 and boosted its market share over several rivals, according to Furniture/Today's exclusive survey of the Top 10 U.S. bedding producers.
Meanwhile, No. 4 Spring Air posted the biggest sales gain among the major producers, and King Koil pulled ahead of Therapedic for the No. 5 slot.
But nobody is close to Sealy in total sales. It had domestic bedding shipments for the Sealy, Stearns & Foster and Bassett Bedding brands last year of almost $1.1 billion, putting it almost $400 million ahead of No. 2 Serta.
When only Sealy-brand bedding is considered, however, Sealy's lead drops to about $100 million.
Sealy's strong performance last year was led by its high-end Stearns & Foster brand, up about 20% to $258 million. The company's Sealy-brand business, the biggest portion of Sealy's total revenues, was essentially flat last year, according to Furniture/Today estimates.
Serta holds No. 2 spot
Serta held onto its No. 2 position, posting a modest overall sales gain of 0.3%. The company's total U.S. bedding sales last year were $726 million. Serta's performance was affected by a decline in its high-end Masterpiece line, which dropped to $18 million from $24 million a year earlier.
In the No. 3 spot once again is Simmons, which rebounded from a minus growth year in 2001 to post a 4.6% sales gain last year, with domestic bedding shipments of $704 million.
Sales figures for the industry's Elite Three producers were audited or verified by accountants. The figures for the rest of the Top 10 producers are estimates developed by Furniture/Today.
The No. 4 slot again is occupied by Spring Air. By Furniture/Today's estimate, the company posted a 9.3% sales gain in 2002 to continue its standing as the industry's fastest-growing major producer.
King Koil rises to No. 5
The biggest change in the Top 10 list is the emergence of a new No. 5 player. That position, formerly held by Therapedic, is now occupied by King Koil, which had total estimated domestic bedding sales last year of $117 million.
Therapedic dropped to the No. 6 spot with estimated sales of $110 million.
Close behind Therapedic is Englander, with 2002 sales estimated at $108 million. That brand, purchased by England last year, includes bedding sales generated under both the England and Englander labels.
Kingsdown and Restonic also changed places on the Top 10 list last year, according to Furniture/Today's research. Kingsdown is the new No. 8 producer, with 2002 bedding sales of $98 million. Restonic, in the No. 9 spot, had estimated sales in '02 of $92 million.
Once again in the No. 10 spot is Lady Americana, with estimated 2002 bedding sales of $72 million.
