HIGH POINT MARKET: Barcalounger Home offers quick-ship leather program

Features cushioning system developed with Serta

Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, April 21, 2009

Barcalounger Home is rolling out a quick-ship leather recliner program at the High Point Market that features a seat cushioning system developed in partnership with bedding major Serta.

The program, known as 24/Seven, involves seven recliner styles and 24 leather covers that can be shipped in seven days.

The cushioning system employs Serta's patented Comfort Quilt technology and gives the consumer a choice of three types of seat cushion.

"We have taken components of that technology and adopted it to our seating," said Larry Smith, Barcalounger's executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "We think it transcends some of the science of sleep comfort into the world of seating comfort."

The standard Comfort Quilt cushioning features convoluted foam wrapped in Dacron fiber. That can be upgraded to either a Blend Down or Spring Down option, which features foam-encased springs.

"The exclusive Serta Comfort Quilt provides an enhanced comfort story," said Smith. "The consumer will be able to select their desired seating comfort ...for further personalization of the product."

The partnership with Serta allows Barcalounger to use Serta's logo and its famous "counting sheep" in advertisements and promotional material for the 24/Seven program.

"This is the first time that a renowned company like Barcalounger Home has taken a patented bedding feature and translated it into a seating advancement," said Bob Malin, vice president of licensing for Serta. "It's exciting to have an opportunity to partner in a way that provides obvious and immediate benefits to consumers across the country."

Smith said retailers participating in the program will benefit from, among other things, increased sales per square foot, reduced inventory levels, and priority service from the factory.

Available recliners will be a combination of best-sellers and new chairs, and will include a range of traditional, transitional, casual and urban styles.
