ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The slump in the U.S. mattress industry continued in February, with bedding unit sales down 15.6% and the dollar value of those units down 17.9% from the same month last year, according to the International Sleep Products Assn.
ISPA's latest Bedding Barometer report presents a snapshot of activity as recorded by 18 U.S. mattress producers.
One indication of the industry's weakness was that the average unit selling price - which usually remains on the upswing - dropped by 2.7% in February, to $198.20, from $203.60 in February of 2008.
For January and February combined, bedding unit sales were down 17.1% from a year earlier while the dollar value of bedding shipments was down 17.2%.
The Bedding Barometer figures represent 45.9% of the industry's unit shipments and 58.1% of the wholesale dollar value of those shipments, according to ISPA.
