Federal Way, Wash. — Federal Way, Wash.— A gift from the Weyerhaeuser Co. Foundation is helping Washington state furniture manufacturers enhance the skills of their workforces at Mississippi State's Institute of Furniture Manufacturing and Management.
A $25,000 grant will provide distance-learning equipment and technologies for the university's furniture program.
Providing workforce education that will maintain the domestic industry's international competitiveness is the main focus of the institute, said Steve Bullard, the institute' director.
"Manufacturing industries, including furniture companies and their suppliers, have been impacted in recent years by imports," said Bullard. "Primarily, this involves countries where wages are much lower and production costs are less because of fewer regulations in areas such as the environment and working conditions."
