Bedding Flammability
Industry's clock still ticking on mattress flammability rules
By David Perry -- Furniture Today, June 28, 2004
High Point — The clock continues to tick on mattress flammability.
California says it will begin enforcing its stringent new open flame mattress flammability standard on Jan. 1, which means the industry now has only about six months left to gear up and roll out new lines incorporating fire-resistant protection.
But there are questions about California's ability to legally enforce those standards.
In the pages that follow, we provide a quick update on the key flammability issues facing the industry.
Our presentation includes a look at two educational forums that the International Sleep Products Assn. is offering that focus on flammability topics. A live ISPA-sponsored conference call on the issue is set for 1 p.m. on June 17.
On the FR supplier front, we look at the work being done by a number of companies, including Hickory Springs, Freudenberg Nonwovens, Western Nonwovens, DuPont and Latex Foam International.
Our FR package also offers tips on how bedding producers should choose an FR supplier. The tips were supplied by Frank Kelly of Elk Technologies.
Although flammability is a key issue facing the industry, it's not the only one. Our bedding presentation also includes a recap of the hectic social scene at the ISPA Expo earlier this year.
Guess how many parties and receptions yours truly was able to attend? The answer is on Page 26.
As usual, it's good to have you along for the ride.
