Free trade group raises more than $2M

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, September 15, 2003

The Chinese Furniture Manufacturers Committee for Free Trade said last week it has already raised more than $2 million in its fight against a pending antidumping petition from U.S. manufacturers targeting wood bedroom furniture from China.

The Chinese group includes manufacturers of dining room and occasional furniture, as well as bedroom products. The group recently retained the Washington law firm Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering to carry on the legal battle against the U.S. petition backers, the American Furniture Manufacturers Committee for Legal Trade.

The Chinese committee said it continues to raise more funds, and that companies that have already committed money say they'll provide more if necessary.

Some of the major manufacturers participating in the Committee for Free Trade include Lacquer Craft, Markor, Shing Mark, Rui Feng, Wood Worth and Tech Lane.

Also in the group are trading companies doing business with the factories.

Lacquer Craft produces furniture for Universal, and is a supplier to Legacy Classic, as is Markor. Rui Feng is a supplier for Standard and U.S. retailer Value City.
