Vegas building to begin

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 31, 2003

Developers of the World Market Center here say construction is expected to start this month, later than the previously announced August start date but soon enough to keep the project on schedule for its first furniture market in January 2005.

"We are still on track and on schedule," said Shawn Samson, co-managing partner in the $1 billion, 7.5 million-square-foot project near downtown Las Vegas. The first phase will be a 1.3 million-square-foot, 10-level market building.

Samson said the WMC has received needed approvals related to grading at the site, the first step in the construction process. He would not say when this month the work would likely begin.

Some industry observers are skeptical that the WMC can complete the first-phase building in time for the first market, scheduled for Jan 18–21, 2005. But Samson disagreed, saying the construction will take 14 months.
