High Point — The American Furniture Manufacturers Assn. has two conferences slated for September.
AFMA's annual meeting for human resources and safety professionals will be expanded to include environmental executives. Called "Putting All the Pieces Together," it is set for Sept. 10–12 at the Embassy Suites Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Also on tap is the annual Financial Management Seminar, coming Sept. 23–24 at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center, Greensboro, N.C.
At the Myrtle Beach meeting, professional development workshops and educational programs will be held concurrently in each of the three areas of interest. Speakers will include John Henshaw, assistant secretary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; Dan Fiorino, director of the Industry Strategies Division of the Environmental Protection Agency; and Scott Geller, senior partner at the Center for Applied Behavior Systems.
At a dinner Sept. 11, three leadership awards will be presented in safety, human resources and environmental management. The first annual safety award will be given in honor of White Watkins, AFMA's vice president of HR/safety for 12 years, and the first environmental award will be presented in honor of Larry Runyan, AFMA's vice president of manufacturing services for 21 years. Both retired from AFMA last December.
At the Financial Management Seminar, subjects to be covered include new and emerging accounting and auditing topics; state and local taxes; merger and acquisition trends; documents and records retention; the Sarbanes/Oxley Act; tax-advantaged financing structures; and incentive compensation.
Also scheduled is an information technology update, an overview of the 2002 AFMA Operating Ratios Report, and a report on coping and thriving in the face of medical plan cost increases. A golf outing is slated Sept. 24 after the business session adjourns.
A complete agenda and registration details for both meetings are available at www.afma4u.org.
