Suppliers to discuss antidumping action

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, August 11, 2003

A group of suppliers to U.S. case goods manufacturers will meet here this week to discuss participation in an antidumping petition targeting wood bedroom furniture from China.

John Bassett, chairman and chief executive officer of Vaughan-Bassett and spokesman for the American Furniture Manufacturers Committee for Legal Trade, which is filing the petition with the U.S. Department of Commerce and International Trade Division, said hundreds of suppliers have been invited to the meeting, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Airport Marriott in Greensboro.

"We started with invitations to 174 companies, but now we've sent out over 400," Bassett said. "This is a whole segment of the furniture industry that is under the radar screen but who are being affected as much as us by Chinese imports."

Thousands of jobs have been lost among the freight companies, sawmills, components suppliers and other businesses that support domestic furniture manufacturing, Bassett said.

"We'll discuss the petition and will be asking them to support our effort financially at the meeting," he said.
