PeopLoungers launching imported line
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, March 31, 2003
High Point — PeopLoungers is unveiling at market a line of imported wood and upholstered furniture that features the company's first fully assembled upholstery from China.
The new collection, which features all-leather stationary and motion sofas that coordinate with occasional tables, entertainment centers and accent pieces, enables dealers to show a complete room setting with PeopLoungers furniture.
"This is our first effort to show a whole room full of our furniture," said Jerry Marlin, executive vice president of merchandising. "We're very excited about the possibilities."
PeopLoungers is best known for motion upholstery, but has imported a line of wood entertainment centers for several years. And last year, the company added stationary upholstery to the mix.
"We're offering some tremendous values on these groups," Marlin said. "It's a new marketing direction for us."
He said all-leather stationary sofas, for example, will retail for $799 to $1,199 at a full keystone markup.
The sofas include features such as eight-way, hand-tied seating, and can be packaged with complete room collections with reclining chairs, occasional tables, entertainment centers and accent pieces.
While the new line marks the first time the company has imported fully assembled upholstered pieces, Marlin noted the company also is boosting domestic production. PeopLoungers recently purchased a 180,000-square-foot factory in Mantachie, Miss., that soon will be producing stationary upholstery.
The new factory is about 20 miles from the company's main plant in Nettleton, Miss., which encompasses about 550,000 square feet.
